Sound Patterns

The spelling words are chosen systematically. Each week’s six words share one sound pattern, and the patterns build on each other across the year, from short vowels through blends, digraphs, silent e, vowel teams, and r-controlled vowels, in the order children usually learn to read them.

Sight Words to Learn by Heart

Two words each week are sight words, the common words that do not follow a regular phonics pattern (or use one your child doesn't know yet). They are marked on every Vocabulary page so your child knows which words to memorize, and they will see them inside the sentences on the activity pages.

Word Fun Activities
