It was created for learning at home, where young children benefit from clear structure, age-appropriate practice, familiar routines, and plenty of time to keep being children.

Kindergarten is still a parent-led year. You'll read directions aloud, introduce new skills, and work alongside your child as needed. The pages use tracing, coloring, cutting, pasting, sorting, drawing, writing, and hands-on practice to keep the work appropriate for this age.

You can use the curriculum as your academic foundation, then add read-alouds, library books, nature walks, field trips, cooking, chores, conversations, and hands-on learning as they fit your family.

Why the Alphabet Isn’t Taught in ABC Order

You may notice something different when you open Book 1:

The letters are not taught straight through from A to Z.

That is intentional.

The phonics sequence uses a structured literacy approach that introduces letters and sounds in an order that helps children begin putting sounds together into words early in the year.

Instead of waiting until all 26 letters have been introduced before reading begins, your child learns a small group of useful sounds and begins blending them into simple words.

New sounds are added systematically, short vowels are introduced one at a time, and letters that are easy to confuse are separated.

All 26 letters and sounds are introduced by Week 15.

From there, your child moves into short-vowel word families, blends, digraphs, and beginning long-vowel patterns while continuing to practice the skills learned earlier in the year.

Reading, Phonics, and Early Fluency

Your child begins with phonemic awareness: listening for, blending, segmenting, adding, deleting, and changing sounds and syllables.

Phonics builds through all 26 letters and sounds, short vowels, CVC words, word families, beginning and final blends, digraphs, open syllables, two-syllable words, and beginning long-vowel patterns.

Reading work also includes concepts of print, fiction and nonfiction, poetry and nursery rhymes, story elements, main topic and key details, retelling, text features, asking and answering questions, and learning to use both words and pictures to understand a text.

Language and Grammar

Your child will practice nouns, plural nouns, verbs, noun-verb agreement, adjectives, prepositions, question words, capitalization, punctuation, statement and question sentences, sentence building, word meanings, affixes, context clues, and other foundational language skills.

Writing

Writing begins with drawing and talking about an idea, then grows into sentences that match your child’s illustrations.

Across the year, your child will practice personal narrative, opinion, and informative writing while learning to brainstorm, organize ideas, draft, edit, create a final copy, fix mistakes, and add detail to sentences.

Math

Your child will count to 100 by ones and tens, write and represent numbers to 20, count forward and backward, compare numbers and quantities, compose and decompose numbers, and build numbers 11–19 with base-ten blocks.

Math also includes addition and subtraction within 10, word problems, pairs that make 10, 2D and 3D shapes, sorting, graphing, measurement, ruler practice, telling time, elapsed time, coins, and beginning money skills.

Science

Your child will explore scientists and observation, the body and five senses, properties of objects, weather and severe weather safety, seasons, forces and motion, simple machines, living and nonliving things, plants, animals, life cycles, habitats, light, heat, sound, magnets, rocks, natural sources of water, objects in the sky, technology, health, and more.

Observation, problem-solving, experiments, and hands-on activities are included throughout the year.

Social Studies, Citizenship, Geography, and Financial Literacy

Your child will learn about rules and why they matter, authority figures, government, voting, needs and wants, jobs, communities, similarities and differences among people, cultural groups, U.S. symbols, patriotic holidays, historical figures, timelines, calendars, geography, and how the characteristics of a place affect the people, plants, animals, weather, and activities found there.
